Ten years and 22 days. That’s how long-ago Travis Scott originally released his second mixtape “Days Before Rodeo.” This project is technically Scott’s second mixtape of his career, even though he just released it in Aug. 2024.
On the “Days Before Rodeo’s” 10-year anniversary, Scott and his label, Grand Hustle Records, decided to finally release “Days Before Rodeo” to streaming platforms such as Apple Music and Spotify. During its first week, the album sold a little more than 361,000 units, selling only 1,000 less units than Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet.” Carpenter’s album blocked Scott’s album from debuting number one on Billboard’s 200.
Scott has had the best first-week sales out of any hip-hop/rap album out of anyone this year. He has sold more than 80,000 units to the album in second place, Eminem’s “The Death of Slim Shady.” “Days Before Rodeo,” is the fourth rap album this year to sell more than 200,000 units. The list including Post Malone’s “F-1 Trillion,” Future and Metro Boomin’s “We Don’t Trust You,” Eminem’s “The Death of Slim Shady,” and Travis Scott’s “Days Before Rodeo.”
Instead of debuting at number one, Scott had to settle for his album earning the second spot on the famed list. Only one of the songs, “Drugs You Should Try It,” on the album managed to get onto Billboard’s Hot 100 song list so far earning a spot at 66. Scott himself earned the number two spot on the Billboard Artist 100.
Even though Scott’s album was not released to all streaming platforms for 10 years, his fans still found a way to enjoy his music. Over 10 years, he managed to rack up over 413 million plays on SoundCloud.
We conducted a poll to see whether Wharton High School students enjoyed “Days Before Rodeo.” The poll was posted onto Wharton Newspaper’s Instagram page on Sept. 10, getting a total of 178 responses. 25% said yes, 12% said no, and 62% of those that responded said they did not listen to the album.
Scott’s discography includes a whole bunch of music. It includes four studio albums, one compilation album, one collaborative album, two mixtapes, three collaborative mixtapes, two collaborative EPs, and more than 50 singles and features. Scott’s most popular album is “Rodeo,” which follows “Days Before Rodeo,” but was released to streaming platforms, while his most popular songs come from multiple works. “Days Before Rodeo,” could possibly rank as one of his top projects depending on who you ask.
“Days Before Rodeo would actually be third place, I would put Rodeo and Astroworld above it among his projects,.” Kayode Akinsete, a senior, said.
Despite being as popular as Scott is, he has only won two awards across his career, with zero of them being Grammys. He has won the “Best Short Form Music Video,” from the Latin Grammy Awards and the “Best Hip-Hop Song,” from the VMA’s. Scott has been nominated 38 times across multiple categories and award shows.
Many people believe that Scott has been robbed of many awards, including the “Best Rap Album,” award from the Grammys. Once when his album “Astroworld” lost to Cardi B’s album “Invasion of Privacy” in 2019 and another time in 2024 when his highly anticipated album “Utopia” lost to Killer Mike’s “Michael.” 2024’s decision was considered one of the biggest robberies when you look at numbers compared, as many Travis Scott fans took to the internet to let their anger out.
