The Wharton Volleyball team kicked off the start of its 25-26 Season with four wins, dropping no sets. With only six returning players from last season, the team has a new look including two freshmen and a transfer in the starting lineup. The team has high hopes for this season.
Wharton volleyball has historically been one of the school’s top performing sports teams, consistently finishing its season with a winning record, and they intend to keep that tradition going this season. Head Coach Eric Barber sees “Tons of potential” with this group, adding “We have players who are very skilled in their position, and getting better with every practice and game”. Senior middle and captain Courtney Dubs also sees that potential this season, but on the more mental side of the sport, claiming “We always hype each other up after every point and that energy will carry us through our season”. With a combination of skill and attitude, this team is ready to show up and show out.
Amia Kennerdy has been a standout player since her freshman year. The 5’10 junior has led the team in kills for the past two seasons; she has also been at least in the top 3 in aces. With close to 400 kills in her first two seasons alone, she is expected to put her foot on the gas this season. Senior Lauren Galfond led the team in assists with 260 in the 24-25 season, an impressive feat, but she feels her setting skills have improved from last year with her accuracy. Captain Makiah Bryant has been a consistent force and a leader since her freshman year, with no intention of letting up this year after leading the team in digs last season.
This season the team has three captains, seniors Makiah Bryant, Lauren Galfond, and Courtney Dubs. Teammates say that they all have different leadership styles that balance each other out. Makiah brings her fiery competitive energy, Courtney will always be there to pick you up when you fall, and Lauren brings a sense of calm in big moments.
Two freshmen have earned themselves a spot in the starting lineup, setter Zoe Ananga and defensive specialist Layla Petschel. Both players said the biggest adjustment they have had to make is adapting to the intensity and high stakes that come with playing on varsity. Coach Barber said that they stood out because of their “mature understanding of their position”. Teammates would agree, adding that their “fun personalities” and “volleyball IQ” make them the perfect addition to the team.
