Two summers ago, the famous movie “Freaky Friday” known for its iconic jokes and hilarious plot, announced that there would be a sequel called “Freakier Friday.” Original Freaky Friday fans are posting all over social media saying that this is the greatest sequel of all time while others are saying they are disappointed.
The sequel Freakier Friday came into theaters August 8th, 2025, and is expected to come out around November 19, 2025. Some people have some mixed feelings about this movie. While some people love the nostalgic value and performances, others criticize the film for its lack of change and plot consistency. On Rotten Tomatoes, the way people react is mixed. Currently, the approval rating is around 55%, while this film is blending with nostalgia, comedy and new plotlines. Some fans don’t like the new characters or plot mechanics. In this film the characters Anna Coleman (Lindsay Lohan) and Tess Coleman (Jamie Lee Curtis) return for the sequel.
“I love this new sequel bringing back nostalgic memories of watching Freaky Friday as a kid. I think this new movie brings a lot of new comedy and twists to it,” said Azaria Wint, a freshman said.
Unlike the original which was centered on a switch between Tess and Anna, this time it introduces a quadruple body swap scenario. Anna (Lindsay Lohan) swaps with her own daughter Harper (Julia Butters), while Tess (Jamie lee Curtis) switches bodies with Harper’s soon to be stepsister Lily (Sophia Hammons). Swapping four characters instead of two brings the comedic stakes and also might bring confusion to some fans. Freakier Friday isn’t quite as “punk rock” as the first one was, but people agree that the movie’s heart is too big for it to be a problem. This new film uses the body swap to show modern family dynamics instead of mother and teen conflict from 2003.
“I prefer sequels to be more like the movie then a different plot because we can be reminded of why we love the first movie so much, and how it can be the same but also new,” said Princy Patel a sophomore said.
Freakier Friday isn’t just about the comedy; it’s also about the nostalgia it brings. This movie blends callbacks from the 2003 version with returning cast members giving a reunion vibe. This movie uses similar settings and jokes from the film in 2003 which a lot of fans recognized, fans are getting a hit of nostalgia with some of the songs that are having a comeback in this sequel which includes “take me away” by pink slip ,“baby” by Lindsay Lohan and Julia butters (callback to the first movies baby one more time) and last but not least “one fine day by Maitreyi Ramakrishnan. Most fans have reacted positively to the nostalgia in this new sequel, praising the return of the original cast. However, some viewers felt the heavy use of nostalgia felt more like a shortcut than a new plot.
Freakier Friday balances the fun and craziness of body swapping comedy with themes of family, identity and understanding across generations, while some fans believe that it leans too much on nostalgia. By combining the 2003 film with a take on new generational perspectives.
