President-elect Donald Trump will be moving back into the White House on Monday as he officially becomes the 47th president of the U.S. Inauguration Day includes a formal swearing-in ceremony as well as musical performances, a celebratory parade and several formal balls. Vice-President-elect JD Vance will also take the oath of office, joining Trump on stage to begin their new administration.
An inauguration is the formal ceremony that marks the end of the past presidents’ time and starts the new with the past elected winner. It is the most high-profile part of the transition of power between government leaders in Washington DC. An important aspect of the ceremony consists of the president-elect reciting the oath of office, which is “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Even though Donald Trump won the election in Nov. of 2024, he officially becomes the 47th president of the United States once he says those words on Mon, Jan. 20th, 2024. He previously served as the 45th president between 2017 and 2021. Vance will take an oath of office as well, before he formally assumes the position of vice-president.
According to BBC News, there’s is a bit of controversy revolving around the inauguration of Donald Trump being on the same day as Martin Luther King Day. It is not often that these two holidays fall on the same day, and it has only happened one other time since it is a pretty young holiday. The next time MLK Day will fall on Inauguration Day will be 2053 for the 2052 election. A lot of people believe that it is very weird to have Inauguration Day on the same day as MLK day because they believe he does not fall into the group of MLK supporters. Others will say that it is just how the Calander placed it. A Wharton Highschool student, Dylan, was asked what he thinks about these two very important days falling on the same day and if changing the days would be better, Dylan said, “Changing the date of Inauguration Day would require constitutional amendments, as it’s set by the 20th Amendment.” He also said, “The overlap of Donald Trump’s Inauguration and MLK Day is coincidental, and its significance depends on individual interpretation.”
The Inauguration will be at St. John’s Church, Lafayette Square, a historic Washington DC church, followed by tea at the White House. Musical performances and opening remarks are set to begin on the main event stage located on the West Lawn of the US Captial building at 9:30 AM EST. That will be followed by the swearing-in of Trump and Vance as well as the inaugural address in which the president will set out his goals for the next four years.
