The sunshine state has finally received snow after 47 years of dreadful heat. A record-breaking fall left many stuck at home not knowing how to drive in the snow. We have now left our hurricane days behind us and introduced snow days. Places like Tallahassee, Pensacola, and Jacksonville all received snow.
Many residents spent days preparing for the record-breaking fall. Widespread reports of 5-12 inches of snow were reported around Pensacola, causing FL Governor Ron Desantis to shut down roads. Officials feared of lingering snow and ice on the roadway that would leave travel too dangerous.
Desantis issued a state of emergency ahead of the wintry mess. He stated that this was going to have record-breaking amounts of snow, and the panhandle needed to prepare.
With the fall, came many incidents. While many people were aware of the issue of how bad the roads were, there were also many people ignoring it thinking their cars will be fine, but it left many with casualties from a series of crashes leaving them nothing else to do except shut down those roads, including Interstate 10 which was one of the main roads with the casualties.
Although there were many people scared of the conditions there were also students gleaming with excitement to be able to spend their college nights with their friends in the snow in the comfort of their home.
“The snow was an exciting experience that brought all the students at FSU together for our first year of college. We received a few snow days as well,” Alexis Brewis, a Wharton alumni, said.
The snow not only left Floridians freezing but it also allowed them to bring out the heater, make a fire and cozy up next to their loved ones. From sitting at the fire with hot chocolate to tubing in the snow with a boogie board, us Floridians will always find a way to have a good time.
“We were able to build snowmen, walk through the football field in the snow, and overall make memories with our roommates,” said Brewis.
With many fun activities in the snow brought many new trends, from spending their night in the Florida State University Stadium with their friends, making TikTok’s and looking up at the stars, to having reports posted about the snowfall each hour.
The snowy day in FL didn’t stop people from going to the beach though. Videos circulating on TikTok of Floridians taking advantage of the cold and getting their cold plunge in. Good thing we just rung in the New Year because they took their commitment to a cold plunge every morning very seriously.
Along with many other trends one of the most popular was everyone dancing around at the beach listening to “Snow at the Beach” by Taylor Swift. This once and a lifetime experience left many talking about it for months and others wishing they could witness it as well.
The dangerous roads didn’t stop us though, there were seen to be many people driving to go see snow no matter how dangerous the roads were said to be.
