Project Hail Mary is the latest block buster movie of 2026, an intense sci-fi film that has consistently kept its audience enthralled, waiting for the next scene. Starring Ryan Gosling, in just the opening week it grossed 80.5 million dollars and is scheduled to be the highest-grossing movie of 2026.
Originally a science fiction book by Andy Weir, it follows the plot of a scientist-turned-middle school teacher being tasked with saving the earth from a world-ending event. Andy Weir also wrote The Martian, which also became a very successful movie released in theatres, so there are high expectations for Project Hail Mary. One of the highlights of this movie was the fact that CGI was only a small portion of the entire movie. Ryan Gosling, also the producer of the film, made the impressive decision to make the character Rocky a real puppet instead of full CGI. This added a special aspect to Rocky that made him very endearing to audiences.
Project Hail Mary is not the only book adaptation to hit theatres this year, and the most recent one was Wuthering Heights. This movie was very controversial as it did not adhere to specific aspects of the book that added context to the plot. This is because Wuthering Heights was not a true adaptation of the book, meanwhile Project Hail Mary is a rather close adaptation. It is unfortunate though, as the movie was forced to cut out some scenes from the book as it would just simply make the film too long for theatres to approve of.
Although they cut some amazing scenes, in my opinion, this was a very good movie adaptation that could have been a standalone movie and still be amazing. The most impactful aspect of this film was by far the soundtrack, which used a medley of different cultures’ music to highlight that it took a global effort. Specifically, they used a Māori song and an Argentinian song which added a significant amount of emotion to some nse scenes.
