Time and time again, the Box Office has had highs and lows with the movies it pushes out throughout the year, and history has repeated itself again. Barbenheimer was the hit of the summers in 2023. We are seeing a boom of movies that have come out this summer. Hits like Deadpool 3 and Alien: Romulus that have brought back fans into theaters when they were looking bare.
Movies like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga ended up flopping after having some of the highest budgets for their movie. These losses did not start off the summer right, leaving much anticipation for how the following movies would do. But to their surprise, movies came out and were ranked with flying colors.
The movie Deadpool & Wolverine has since had the sixth-biggest debut in Box Office history. Released on July 26 the movie has accumulated $606,075,691 and over $1.26 billion internationally. This is also due to the extra promotions done by the lead actors Ryan Renolds and Hugh Jackman in Korea, including a panel, interview with idols, and Waterbomb. The duo made history in doing so on top of the movie’s success. Along with these promotions, the movie has been hyped up since the last Deadpool movie, with end credit scenes leaving speculation to what producers will come out with the next time around. With the reveal of Wolverine being in the next movie after having supposedly finished his career in Logan, fans have only got more excited about the long-awaited duo to debut. Because of this, there have been many people watching it, even around us.
“It was a rebirth that marvel needed, and it was a good exit for Hugh Jackman,” Tamar Gordon, a senior, said.
Deadpool was not the only hit, with Alien: Romulus also making its debut in theaters. Following the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus has ranked the number two spot for grossing in the franchise, threatening to pass Prometheus which holds the number one spot. It was the box office weekend opening, it became number one, dethroning Deadpool & Wolverine. This movie continued a long time in the making saga of Alien movies, all tying back to its original. The saga has run from generation to generation, bringing in new fans while holding onto the past ones. Romulus did a throwback to the original Alien by making the creatures infect the humans in the same way. Throwbacks like this brought more excitement and higher ratings for the movie as a whole.
Along with such movies, Inside Out 2 was released this summer on July 14. The original Inside Out movie was released the summer of 2015, leaving a gap for its younger viewers to grow up with the main character Riley. The 9-year gap between movies allowed those viewers to go through their own teenage years, experiencing the feelings and adventures that come with such as those seen in Inside Out 2. This feeling of the audience being able to relate and understand the main character brought even more joy to viewers, leading to its great success.
“The movie was cringeworthy but wholesome,” Alanna Patricio, a senior, said.
Inside Out 2 did so well within the Box Office, that it overtook Avengers and is now placed in the all-time top ten at global box office.
With Deadpool & Wolverine, Alien: Romulus, and Inside Out 2, the Box Office came back into the light when people were doubting them. This doubt mainly has come from the fact that directors are making movies that are prequels and sequels to previous stories. Such opinions have left there to be low standards for those movies coming out. But there is still hope because the movies that came out this summer, even while being sequels and prequels, showed to have enormous success and people praising them highly.
