The Warhammer 40k series has had many iterations of content and 37 years under their belt to hone their craft of games, books, and even board games. It has been credited as “Dungeons and Dragons in space with really strange powers.” Its most recent release has been a 3rd person shooter named Warhammer 40k: Space Marines has probably been its most critical and commercial release ever.
In this release, there are 3 games modes to choose from, the campaign, Eternal War, and Operations. In the campaign mode, you take control of a legendary character in the series, General Titus, when he was a lieutenant, which was seen to other Space Marines as lowly and scum to some higher ranks. As he climbs the ranks of The Imperium, he will go on many missions to eradicate a species called Tyrranids, who’s only purpose is to kill of everything they could ever find and wipe out species.
Jonathan Kirk, a second-year student and longtime Warhammer player says, “In Warhammer, the best interactions come from player vs player activity and that in this game is still true. I have enjoyed leveling up my different classes and working on using different guns.”
In Eternal War you fight heretic defectors who worship the god of death Nurgle and can play as the imperium as well. Each team is usually made of 6 players and is seen by some as the most fun in the game. You can either play capture the flag where you try collect intel on the other side by any means necessary. Annihilation, where your objective is to absolutely destroy the other team, is the most fun player vs player experience that Warhammer has ever put out and is wildly entertaining to anybody who enjoys the elements of pvp and class building madness in a game.
Xavier Lesperance, a first-year student at Wharton high says, “out of everything in the game, the customization is by far my favorite in any Warhammer gamer ever.”
The customization in the game revolves around the different types of factions that the space marines make up, including death watch, black, templars, thousand sons, and even more factions to fall under during your fight against the tyrranids and heretic space marines.
The story mode has been described by players as a thrilling yet insightful view of the world of Warhammer and the space marines, the matriarchs of the space marines conquered, and the factions they consider enemies.
The golden rule is Warhammer 40K is that there are no good guys in this story, just whoever you want to align yourself with. The space marines are ruthless beings who slaughter and murder these creatures for the sake of glory and the ability to die what they would consider a meaningful death in battle.
So, keeping that nice rule in mind have fun, after all it is a roleplaying game, so roleplay as a religious soldier in the future keeping your brothers safe in the battle for your emperor!!!
